Breast reduction
It is a surgical procedure held in order to the reduct breasts’ size and reshape them by transfering nipple-areolar complex to the new place.
The operation involves excising fat, skin, and redundant tissues.
In our clinic we perform breast reduction since early 90’s using different methods.
History
Chembers was the first surgeon who performed the reduction of pendulous and large breast in 1896. The extracted tissues weighted 11 kg.

Biesenberger worked out a type of reduction mammoplasty with transposition of the nipple, consisting in excision of the lateral portion of the mammary gland in 1928.
Some methods of reduction mammaplasty were developed by Ivo Pitanguy.
Indications
This kind of surgery is oriented toward women with pendulous, large breasts – gigantomastia, which may cause aesthetic (sweating and problems of choosing swimming costumes and brassieres) and medical problems (chronic pain of back, breathing problems, irritation of the skin, etc.)
Young patients with large breasts may also feel inferiority and have problems with social life.
Although it is proved that breast reduction can not cause the cancer, every patient has to have mammography or ultrasonic examination and consultation with the doctor.
Operation
The operation is performed under general anesthesia during 3-6 hours.
While the operation redundant skin, fat and glandular tissues are partly excised.
Nipple-areolar complex is repositioned on a soft-tissue pedicle.
The incisions are made around the areola, vertically and in the crease underneath the breast.
Sometimes drainage is needed which is taken off in 2-4 days.
Post-operation Period
The patient is discharged to ambulatory treatment in 2-3 days.
The patient gets back to work in 1 week.
Sutures are taken off in 10-12 days. In some cases the sensitiveness of nipple-areola complex might be lost for a while.
Heavy activity is allowed in 1 month.
Scars are finally formed in 12 months.
