Stomach banding with adjustable gastric band

Stomach banding is indicated to patients with 30-70 redundant kg.

An inflatable silicone gastric band is placed around the top of the stomach via laparoscopic surgery. The inner side of band is the soft silicone balloon. The small tube connects the balloon to the system port and makes it possible to change diameter of the lumen; that is why this kind of band is called adjustable.

The main purpose of the procedure is to devide stomach in two parts: upper – small one, about 25 ml and lower part bigger with small hole between them. Food stops in the upper part of stomach because of the small hole, irritates satiety receptors and person satisfies with small amount of food.

The operation is performed under general anesthesia for 1-2 hours.

3-5 small incisions (0,3-0,5 cm) are made via laparoscopy. The silicon cuff is placed on the stomach. To prevent band sliding in the gullet cuff is fixed to stomach wall. The tube that is connected to balloon is placed in chest area or in fatty-skin tissue above the costal margin, where the system port is located.

The patient is discharged to ambulatory treatment on the second day.

Gets back to work in 3-4 days.

Sutures are taken off in 10-12 days.

Driving is allowed in 1 week.

No heavy activity is limited.

In 2 months after the surgery sutures are finally cicatrized and if needed the hole might be narrowed or enlarged.
